Great post. The power to change comes from our realization that we are powerless to change on our own.

"The real question is not how to avoid becoming a Pharisee; the question is how to recover from being the Pharisee we already, from the womb, are." wow, this guy has been reading my script.
"Better a life of sin with penitence than a life of obedience without it." how many people even get this? This is one of the simplest statements that sums up that God wants our heart.

What is it about church leaders that brings out such a FEAR of grace? I have often wondered about motives. On the positive side, is it a legitimate concern that we may run amok and they simply seek to protect us from ourselves? On the negative side, is it that rule-following allows external 'control' to play a part? On the personal front, could it be that follow-the-rules is much more quantifiable than the the qualitative sense of God knowing our hearts? I know that a list of rules is easier to measure success (or failure) against than trusting my heart to God. In the end, I MUST default to grace because I know my own depravity.

Oh man, I so agree here. I won't describe my life when I didn't think much of the depth and ruthlessness of His grace for me, but it bore no resemblance to the life I now have, true LIFE as spoken of in John 10:10. As I've allowed myself to fall deeper in love with Him, the following after Him has become much more different, a response out of my heart, not just something I "ought" to do.

Bono rocks. He echoes C.S. Lewis' famous challenge of liar, lunatic, or Lord. Great to see that Bono is a follower of Christ.

You make a fair point, but have you thought about how it might affect other people? I do not say you're wrong, I just desire to identify that there is more than one side to this story.
